Black Bee Honey
I was browsing through the Paramore Farmer’s Market on a Saturday afternoon when I was approached by two well spoken young men who were trying to sell me a jar of honey. But it wasn’t just “Hey, how are you today, would you like to buy some honey?” It was so much more than that! The young men informed me that they had four types of honey, what the health benefits were of each one, and which food items they felt would go best with my potential selection. Okay, WHOA. Does that not sound like a big deal to you?? Most young children I've come in contact with lately know more information about video games, the latest Instagram and Snapchat post than anything else. (Not all, but a large majority.) So it was definitely a breath of fresh air to be approached by these young men who were serious about their organization and seemed to have a genuine interest in the products they desired to sell.
Black Bee Honey is an entreprenuial start up brought to you by the youth who are a part of the Paramore Kids Zone program; A program that helps shape leaders and provides a positive outlet that allows them to gain additional educational and work related experience. (And that's only a few of the great things the program offers!) Since being established in 2017, Black Bee Honey has been able to provide at risk youth, both male and female, with the opportunity to become entrepreneurs while developing their educational and social skills. The Paramore Farmers Market, where the honey is sold, is a part of a city initiative that allows healthy alternatives to be bought into a neighborhood that has few food options with significant nutritional value present. Honestly, I could go on and on about these programs, their importance and why you should care about this, but I'll save that rant for another day.
I'm soooo happy that these kids have been presented with the opportunity to do something productive when there’s one million other problematic things they could be doing. Clearly Black Bee Honey is a positive movement in the Orlando community and if you’ve reached this sentence and still don’t feel compelled to support the children then you should re-read this blog post and then check to see if you have a heart. But seriously, this honey is the bees-knees. (I know how cheesy that last sentence was, but I think it’s appropriate so it’s here to stay. Deal with it.)
Price: $13 per jar. It's real honey, with excellent benefits, do it for your health and then for the kids. Or vice versa. Whichever way compels you to provide the most support for Black Bee!
Location: Paramore Farmers Market on Saturdays 9am-1pm. Just outside of the Orlando City Soccer stadium.
